Today we’ll talk about how to become an Uber driver, how to find a Uber driver, and how to make the most of the service that’s just one tap away from your doorstep.
Uber is taxi-like service that is active in many major cities around the world and expanding it’s reach at an alarmingly fast rate.
It’s all automated, all you have to do is download the app and then use the app to find a nearby vehicle, all the payments are done online.
Micro-transactions take care of all the fees, it’s all done via credit or debit card. There are also several different ways to make money with the company.

What Makes Uber Special:
For one, the convenience.
Uber is an app that was launched back in 2009 – it claimed to make it possible for people to find a taxi-like car to transport them to their destination. It was a completely new idea at the time, risky at first, but people were hooked, and soon Uber cars started to pop up in many different cities.
This is how it works…
You create an account with the company and download the app.
Next, fire up the app, login, and you’ll see a map. You simply have to click “Find a Driver” and the app will automatically scan for all the Uber drivers in the area and connect you with the closest driver, for convenience. This eliminates the inconvenience of having to wait for a specific driver to arrive.
No need to worry about meters, the app will calculate the fair and deduct the amount from your credit or debit card.
But besides the extreme convenience, there are a couple of other benefits that should be mentioned.
Benefits of Uber:
For instance, Uber drivers are highly regulated, and there is a review system that allows customers to rate their experience with the driver. If the driver’s rating is less than 4 out of 5 stars, he won’t be able to work for the company.
This rating system encourages drivers to do their best to create a comfortable and pleasant experience for their passengers.
On top of that, the vehicles are all up-to-date and modern, the rides are extremely comfortable, and the drivers are highly professional. There’s no need to worry about getting picked up by a car that is one pot-hole away from total destruction.
So it’s clear why people are interested in using this service, it’s exceptional. I have used the service several times and I never had a problem, the map system could use some improvement, but other than that, the service is superb.
How to Become an Uber Driver:
Uber has a share-a-ride service that allows drivers to work for the company as a independent contractor (basically a freelancer but for rides) and earn some extra cash on the side.
You can use your own car, but there are certain requirements that must be met, for instance, the car’s year must be either from 2000 or 2005 – no older cars are allowed. You will also need to pass a background check and you must be older than 21 years old.
(For more information, check out Uber’s official driver’s guide)
If you meet the requirements, all you have to do is download the app and start picking up passengers. There are two versions of the app, one for passengers to find drivers, and one for drivers to find passengers.
How Much Can You Earn with Uber:
Unfortunately, that’s a difficult question to answer because there are many different factors to consider, not to mention the fact that not all driver’s work full-time.
In fact, most driver’s work part-time and have other full-time jobs.
One the main factors that can determine how much you can earn as a driver is the city that you work in. If Uber has a strong presence in that city and there are plenty of people who need rides, it won’t be difficult to make a decent amount of money driving passengers to their destinations.
Similarly, if you work in a city that where the service has not quite caught on, it will be difficult to earn a significant amount of cash.
Uber Driver Vehicle Types:
Additionally, there are several different types of vehicles to drive, with their own compensation plans. The following are the vehicles you can drive/hire: limousine, taxi, black-car, UberX, or SUV.
You should also remember that that time of day is an important factor too consider as well.
Some driver’s claim to earn $45 an hour while others claim to earn $10 an hour, there is no exact hourly rate.
But, the requirements are not too strict, and if you have a modern vehicle, working for Uber could be an excellent way to earn some more money on the side. It could even be your full-time job!
How to Find a Uber Driver: Tips and Tricks
At the moment, Uber does not allow passengers to request a specific driver, though this might change in the future.
But, if there are no cars in the area, what do you do?
There are a couple reasons why no vehicles are appearing on your screen.
For one, the internet connection of your phone may be experiencing problems. If your phone does not have a internet connection you won’t be able to use the application.
Similarly, if the internet connection is particularly slow, the app will load slowly, and it might take awhile to see all the cars in your vicinity.
It could also be because there are simply no drivers in your area. This often happens when you are in the country-side or far from a major city where Uber does not have coverage.
Conclusion on Uber:
Uber is a fantastic modern, cash-less transportation system that is extremely convenient.
It also provides an income opportunity for anyone who owns a vehicle (or you can rent a vehicle) and you can become a certified Uber driver in no time.
Now you know how to become a Uber driver, don’t forget to sign-up and get started.
Can’t wait to see you on the road!
Hello, Todd!
Uber actually sounds like an awesome concept and sure beats waiting around for buses and traditional taxes (where I live anyway).
The APP is a great idea, but I was wondering if this type of car sefvice is available in the UK or is it just in the cities of America?
I do know that taxi drivers in my city can make a lot of money at weekends at working throughout the night, so I should image Uber drivers could make the same sort of living near where I live, if it was in the UK.
Being an Uber driver wouldn’t really appeal to me because I’m already earning money online, but I do see the benefits of the service for people who do want a little extra cash on the roads 😉
Neil
Hi Neil,
You can become an Uber driver in 60 countries currently, but I don’t believe their in the UK just yet.
Learning how to become an Uber driver is a cool concept, but I’m like you, too busy making money online to worry about making some extra cash on the side. But I do know part time professionals who do it to add to their monthly income.
Thanks Neil for your feedback on Uber and I need to get back to your site soon, I always enjoy reading your posts and learning something new.
Cheers,
Todd
Excellent and timely post on how to become an Uber driver!
I say timely, because over the last several Months, Uber have been introduced here in Perth, Australia as a more convenient cheaper alternative to catching a Taxi.
It has been causing quite a controversy as the Taxi industry is up in arms claiming that Uber do not have all the legislative requirements and it seems to be headed for the courts.
The general public however, seem very pleased with the service Uber offers and believe the Taxi industry needs a bit of a shake up!
I am watching this space with interest and it is good to hear your views on the subject.
Great post Todd 🙂
~John
Hi John,
I hear ya, I’ve seen news throughout Europe too where taxi drivers are upset at the current Uber situation. Like you, I think it’s good to shake up things. Taxi’s here in the states charge way too much and are usually arrogant and rude drivers.
So good for Uber and good for the taxi drivers who get a little wake up call. It’s a free market and this is free market competition.
At the same time, I can understand the view points of the taxi industry. The drivers probably pay a bunch of BS taxes/fees that cut their profits and make some rich people richer. Sorry, I don’t know the taxi driver industry all that well, but that’s my speculation.
I’m sure they pay a registration and/or licensee fee that cuts into their profits.
From a consumer perspective’s it’s great, you get cheaper rides (in 1st world countries) and if you need extra cash and have a good driving record and car, you can make some easy extra cash as well.
After living and traveling through S. America for the last 6 years I’ve been spoiled taking taxis that cost a reasonable price. Come back to the states and a taxi costs you an arm and a leg. So I’m all for Uber.
Thanks for your feedback John and hopefully people will have a better idea on how to become an Uber Driver and will benefit from making some extra cash by reading this post.
Cheers,
Todd
Hey Todd, great post on how to become an uber driver as well as how to find an uber driver. I’ve heard about them but until now I didn’t know what it was exactly.
Very cool.
I really would think it would be cool to do something like this driving for uber part time.
Trouble is I have a truck and a mini Ford Focus. I think this requires a camry? 🙂 Or mercedes!
The image above is of a hybrid so maybe smaller cars would be fine. Let me know.
Let me know if you are invovled with uber as a driver.
Thanks for the article! So cool.
Rick
Hi Rick, yeah, Uber has created a super cool concept that is convenient for users and great for folks who have a little part time and want to drive for Uber.
I’ve just used the service and was impressed with how they structured and run their company. And with my traveling and working on my sites, I don’t think I’ll be a driver for Uber quite yet, but it is a great way to make some extra cash. Especially if you have a part time job or a job with some flexibility in it.
As for your question on the car size, I just went to their site and it wasn’t specified if you can drive a truck or car that doesn’t have a back seat for passengers. Common sense would make me think not and that you just need to have a clean, safe, reliable car or truck that meets the insurance requirements.
Thanks again for your feedback on my article and have a great week Rick.
Take care,
Todd
