In this post we’ll show you how to find a niche market in order to make money online.
It’s not as complicated as you may think. You want to keep it simple, fun, and relatively easy.
Today we’ll focus on…
- Finding you a niche.
- Building a simple niche website.
- Use affiliate marketing and keyword research techniques to bring in free online traffic and sales.
You may not be familiar with these topics, but I guarantee you see and use them every single day.
If you’re looking to build a profitable niche website and need help, keep reading and we’ll get you started on the right path.
How To Find A Niche Market?
When looking to build a niche website for profit, take the dollar signs out of your mind for now.
Instead, think of what makes you happy or what you enjoy doing in life.
Do you have hobbies, passions, or interests that are unique to who you are? Maybe you have a special knowledge base or set of skills that other people can benefit from.
Take a second to think about this and jot down some ideas on a piece of paper and then put it aside for now.
If you can’t come up with any ideas, that’s OK, just put this information in the back of your mind and we’ll apply it here in a second using the video below.
The Key to Online Success: Help People
If you can help people that are interested in the same niche that you enjoy, you can connect with people on a personal level.
This will lead to trust in you, your website, and your content.
In turn, this will result in sales from products that you recommend that are based on helping the needs of your niche audience.
Passion and Niches Go Hand in Hand:
Another reason it’s important to be passionate about, or at least enjoy your niche is because your passion will reflect through your website content (written &/or video content).
This can be a major factor in how successful your niche website will eventually become.
Also, can you imagine writing 20+ articles based on your niche? If the answer is no, then you need to keep looking for niche ideas.
If the answer is yes, then perhaps you’ve found your niche.
Let’s watch this video below that’s produced by the Wealthy Affiliate online business training center, they specialize in helping people create niche websites.
This class and video explain the whole process.
This video will also give you more ideas on how you can come up with niche ideas for your website using retail giants like Amazon.com.
If you wrote down any niche ideas before, take out your list and think about your niche ideas as you watch this video.

As you can see, you can come up with a ton of ideas for niche websites just by looking for hot products using websites like Amazon.com.
You can even go to Walmart.com, HomeDepot.com or any other major retail site.
The key is to try to identify products that are hot sellers in today’s market, and that spark your interest as well.
You can use this method to come up with a ton of great niche ideas for niche websites.
Quick Niche Website Tips:
1). Stay away from seasonal niches. Things like costumes for Halloween, Christmas decorations, etc.
The reason is you want your niche website to produce consistent monthly income and not just spike once or twice per year.
2). Make sure your niche idea has products that are related to your niche.
If you have a passion, hobby, or interest that doesn’t have any products associated with it, you’ll have nothing to sell on your website.
Now if your site sees a ton of traffic, you could sell ads, Google AdSense, etc., but you will make more money by selling products that are related to your niche that benefit your niche audience.
3). I know I said it before but I really want to drive home the point of helping people.
Niche websites that solve problems, help someone learn something, and benefit a particular audience will make all the difference in the success you have with a niche website.
What’s Your Niche Competition:
Niche competition is important to understand because you don’t want to choose a niche that is too competitive or too broad.
Nor do you want to choose a niche that is not popular or is outdated.
You could end up spending a massive amount of time, energy, and resources building a niche website that will never rank or generate sales.
On the flip side, if you understand how to do keyword research for your specific niche, you can get your website content ranked in almost any niche.
Now the more defined and less competitive your niche is, the easier it is to target a specific audience and see quicker results financially speaking.
But this shouldn’t discourage you from exploring a niche you love, even if it is competitive.
Let me show you what I’m talking about.
Use Google Trends & Keyword Research for Every Niche Idea
Every niche idea you come up with should be checked by two sources.
- Google Trends
- A good keyword research tool.
With Google Trends I just want to see that there’s not a downward trend. That’s it, forget the rest of their metrics.
The decision making process as to whether to move forward on a niche idea is based on keyword research.
Why’s that?
Keyword research allows me to find how many people are search specific niche related search phrases.
Things that people google every single day? Basically questions and niche related phrases about topics.
It also always me to see the completion and traffic and that will make all the difference in the success of any niche based website.
Example Niche: Home Brewing
If I go to Google AdWords to find out how competitive the keyword/niche of Home Brewing is, I find these results below.

Now 12,100 average monthly searches (world wide) is a decent amount of monthly searches if I want to develop a niche website that’s based on love for brewing beer out of one’s garage.
Who doesn’t love Home Brews, right?
But we also see that the Competition for this phrase is High, so we might think to stay away from the Home Brewing niche.
However, if I take a good look at this keyword phrase and do a little research on it, I can find that there are many low competition keyword phrases (and website names) that I can use to break into this niche.
Check out my Home Brewing Niche Research video below.
How To Make Money From Your Niche:
Once you have produced quality content that is based on keyword research using long-tail keyword phrases that focuses on building helpful information to your niche audience, you will see your website content start to rank in the search engines like Google.
As you continue to write content based on keyword research about your niche, you will see your posts and website rank grow daily.
As rankings rise, the traffic builds and your start to build a reputation within your chosen niche.
Then you will place affiliate links within your articles that are related to information your niche audience is searching for online.
This strategy will produce excellent results and can be applied to video marketing on YouTube.com as well.
Special Note: In general, you want to internally link your targeted post to a product review. Then on the product review you want to place your affiliate links naturally within your content to take the user to your affiliate product.
This way you won’t come off as a spam website in the eyes of search engines.
Google will actually lower your rankings if they see a lot of affiliate links throughout your posts or pages.

Hi Tay,
I’m sorry you’ve had such a bad experience with Wealthy Affiliate. Very few people do. I’ve learned a ton about SEO and ranking content, as well I now make a full time income working 5-10 hours a week and I continue to build my site, traffic, and earnings. Every month, the monthly income goes up.
Maybe you didn’t understand how long it takes to go through Wealthy Affiliate’s educational program and gave up too soon. I’d encourage you to come back and take the training serious. You can read how long it takes to make money online using affiliate marketing and niche websites as well as why this is the most intelligent and economical way to get started online.
Just the other day I was putting together a local niche site for a business and needed to learn how to get it to rank quickly. I took a 1 hour course and when you google the site’s keywords, it ranks page one, also in Google My Business. That’s just one little course that I took to get amazing results offered by WA.
But what WA has taught me has allowed me to build an online business out of thin air. Well of course I had to work and write and learn, etc. But I now wake up and make killer money every day promoting only solid programs that I know work, and Wealthy Affiliate is the best when it comes to creating a successful online business.
It’s simple, build a niche site and review products. Hit keywords in your niche that people are Googling. This post will eventually rank on page one in time. Today it ranks in Google in page 2, position 17 for the phrase How to Find a Niche Market. For the entire phrase… how to find a niche market for your website it’s in page 1, position 2, and for how to find a niche it ranks in page 3, position 23.
I would have expected better results too, but the quality in the post is there and it will get get to page one with time, comments (thanks for yours btw), and some more social shares. It did have a lower SEO score and so that makes it a bit more difficult to rank, but it’s bringing over 300 new FREE visitors to the site alone per month.
OH, and what WA has taught me has me bringing over 500 to 1,000 free visitors per day. My conversion rates are off the charts as well.
What I’ve done really well is rank reviews as well as staple content like.. Guide To Making Money Online. Google that and see if you see my site. That phrase gets searched over 3K/mo. With reviews, I’ve got over 20 in position 1 in Google and over 50 and counting on Page 1 of Google.
This isn’t hope and pray, it’s strategic keyword research, creating helpful content around the research, and offering helpful products that allow you to build a long term business, one that has the potential for passive income.
This is the first time I’ve worked on this site in 4 days, yet the checks keep rolling in every morning, noon, and night.
Cheers,
Todd
Pursuing a passion or obsession is certainly the way to go when it comes to choosing a niche. For example, if you wanted to enter the “health and fitness” niche, you’d have to be passionate about the topic, but also obsessed with providing helpful content to individuals coming to you for information/advice.
Simply trying to find a niche with major potential can seem like the way to go, but if you don’t care about the topic, you won’t be able to sustain the building process of the business. And in all reality, almost every niche has major potential – there’s over 3 billion internet users.
Matthew, do you want to come and work for my site. You’ve got it down brother. I really appreciate your feedback and your advice is freaking dead on.
Anyone reading this far needs to check out Matthew’s sage advice, this is so critical to online success. I didn’t follow this advice exactly per se, but I was obsessed with learn how to make money online and found the holy grail to online marketing.
And now that my online businesses are on somewhat of a passive system, I will have time to pursue other passions online. But by following you passion over a popular niche market, you’ll make money quicker and more easily.
Thanks Matthew, much appreciated.
Todd
Hey Todd,
I agree with you that passion is key! After all, you’ll be writing a lot in that niche – so you don’t want to burn out after 1 week! Also I think the idea is to become an authority in the niche as much as you can.
These are great and very valuable tips for finding a good niche online.
Best-
Maria
Thanks Maria, finding a niche market that you enjoy learning about is also important. That will help you from getting burned out. If you’re learning new information about your niche market, you website will evolve and grow and you can spread that specific knowledge to help your niche audience.
And if you’ve got helpful content, active site users, and helpful niche based affiliate products or services, you can make a great living online.
Thanks,
Todd
I’ve become convinced from reading your site that I should open up my own website, so thanks for helping me with getting ideas for a good niche based online business. Do you think chess would work? I like chess. There are probably chess items, Games, online lessons, etc I could find on amazon and elsewhere. What do you think?
Hi Ben,
Just google anything chess related and add a + sign with the words affiliate program. This will show you what affiliates there are with anything chess related.
Of course you could affiliate with Amazon and link people to chess related products. I think this would be an easy niche to break into. I would imagine very little competition and this could be easy to rank and sell products.
Go for it. If you need the fast track to building your niche site, go with Wealthy Affiliate’s Online Entrepreneur Course.
There’s also a webinar in the Live Video Classes section that you should watch called 6 week schedule to building a profitable niche website. I’d check that out if I were you as well.
Thanks,
Todd
Hey Todd,
Awesome article. You have explained all the aspects of affiliate marketing and in depth to a great extent.
I have already figured out my niche and setup my project. Just gotta work hard. The Jaaxy tool definitely looks awesome to research & rank pages higher in Google.
I will definitely give it a try. Also, is google adwords worth it? Do you use it personally? I see in a screenshot above labelled as “suggested bid” valued at $1.20. does it mean we have to pay Google that much money if someone clicks on our ad link?
Hi Abdul, I have used a lot of pay per click campaigns for various websites and I think this can be a very effective form of marketing if your landing page convert well.
If it doesn’t, you can lose a lot of money really quickly. The picture you’re referring to is listing the cost of those keywords that you can buy to have your content advertised on Goole whenever someone searches those keywords.
So in this case, you have to pay $1.20 per click for the keywords of…home brewing.
Check out this training on using PPC with Google. I did over a month of training using these classes and was able to create relevant campaigns.
I will tell you this, I think it’s more important to learn how to write quality content and bring in free traffic to your website by ranking content naturally. By learning how to do this, you’ll become a more effective PPC ad writer.
I would also tell you many internet marketers use PPC ads to get people to opt-in to a service. The direct sale from using PPC doesn’t usually happen by taking someone was searching something on the internet and trying to convert them directly to a sale.
And personally, I think content converts people faster because it provides knowledge and value to the reader.
Thanks,
Todd
Hi Todd,
Great write up on how to find a niche market. I started out with a niche that got me curious and after 2 years, I have developed quite a passion for it. So if I may add, perseverance pays as well.
What strikes me in your article is Google Adwords. I don’t use it at all for my niche research and was wondering how much you rely on the data there to come up with a good keyword. Is it something that you use for paid traffic or for search traffic as well?
My sequence of research is always along this pattern;
Google Trend > Alphabet Soup Technique > +/- Search Related Terms > Jaaxy Brainstorming
Thank you for your advice.
Hi Cathy,
No I don’t really use Google Adwords besides making PPC campaigns and find the value of keywords if I’m going to advertise on a post with Google Adsense.
The only reason I brought this up is because I know some outdated or uninformed internet marketers use Google Adwords and I don’t think it’s an accurate way to find a niche market to make money online.
On the contrary, you can see that using a tool like Jaaxy you can find true keyword competition to validate if your niche is a good selection. And I take a look at Google trends too, but mostly I want to see what people are searching for in a give niche market and then evaluate if that’s a market I want to explore.
Really, anymore, I just use the alphabet soup technique and Jaaxy’s brainstorming function. It just saves me time and effort.
Thanks for your feedback,
Todd
Really good tutorial on how to find a niche market and make it profitable. I took a lot away from your article and I think many others will too. It was seriously well laid out and provided excellent content.
With some of the keyword searches you said that 90 competition was good, how much and how long do you reckon it would take to climb the ranks if there was a competition of 90?
Hi Matthew,
Thanks for your feedback on our post. I’m glad it was informative and helpful. That’s what we always strive for here at Learn To Grow Wealth Online.
Anything below 200 QSR is not terribly difficulat to rank if you are providing quality content. But you also should look at the SEO metrics (using Jaaxy). The higher the SEO number, the easier it is to rank.
I would also recommend taking your keyword phrase and searching it with Google and see what you come up with. If you’ve got some authoritative websites that currently rank in the top positions, it will take much more time to get your post to rank.
If not, you can rank in a matter of hours. I’ll give you a couple of examples.
1Sale is a company that exploded several years ago, the owner was featured on Fox News and everyone thought this company was awesome. All they were doing was affiliate marketing and selling Chinese knockoffs online. Eventually the company was exposed and they lost popularity and credibility. But people still search the phrase… What Is 1Sale. I did a review and ranked position 8 (page one in Google) in 2 hours.
Now compare this to my review of Wix. My keyword phrase is What Is Wix Website Builder. This phrase get searched by over 30K people per month. I wrote the best review I could and after socially sharing the post and getting feedback/comments on it, I was in the 30’s (position in Google). With time I’ve gotten it to rank between positions 10 – 14 in Google. It’s also very low competition but has been much more of a challenge to get it into the top 3 positions. Why? Well, there’s a good amount of authoritative sites that have written about Wix as well as Wix has done their homework and gotten this phrase to rank well. I’ll continue to push comments on the post and socially share (create some positive back links) and then move on.
I know you probably want an exact formula. But I think (and this is what Wealthy Affiliate teaches) is to consistently produce quality content (2-4 posts/week), get 5 comments minimum per post in the first week or two, and then move on. Write for your niche audience and strive to bring helpful content and the rankings will come.
Sometimes it takes time. But if it’s low competition with a high SEO score, you can rank high in a day or two. Get more comments and social shares and you can easily be in the top 5 positions in Google.
Hope this helps,
Todd
So much good information on this page, I don’t know where to start! You really taught me a lot on the important steps to take when it comes to niche marketing!
I’m definitely going to apply what I’ve learned to my affiliate marketing websites.
Thank you so much for all the help!
Hey Bimmerguy, that’s great to hear and I’m so happy to have helped. I really think, as you may have guessed in the post, that learning how to find a awesome niche market starts with with a passion and a true desire to help people. It’s that simple.
I know for me this was not the main focus when I started some of my niche websites, but as I changed my focus away from trying to purely make money into helping people, the money just came naturally.
Happy Friday and have a great weekend. To your success with your affiliate marketing websites.
Todd
I here you 100% on the passion front – that needs to be the top priority when choosing a niche. Since you’ll be building a business around that specific topic, you’ll be spending an enormous amount of time on it, and it can certainly be difficult if your niche is something you hate. On the flip side, if it’s something you like, it barely feels like work. Great tips on choosing profitable niches.
Hi Matthew, that is so true. It can be frustrating if you find yourself in a niche where you have lost passion and or never had much passion to begin with for that specific niche market. I think you can still start a niche market if you have a curiosity or a desire to learn about something new. But to have real long-lasting staying power in any niche is going to require passion.
That being said, I have seen specific niche websites do well on less content, if that content is effective at helping out a specific niche audience. It depends on how specific and detailed a niche is.
Thanks for your feedback and take care.
Todd
This is a very good overview and fairly straightforward plan for building on online niche business. I think you’re definitely right that you have to follow your passion and have a blog or website that reflects your own interests. This helps you stay motivated and keeps you working toward your goal. Helping people is also very important. You have to find a need and help people meet that need!
Right on Jared, perfectly stated. If you going to make money online these days you got to be able to help out people within a specific niche market. If you can do that, the world is your oyster.
Cheers,
Todd
Hi Todd!
I like your article very simple to read and understand. In my case was the hardest part of SEO is so much to learn and just winding me. Then I discovered that my keywords were not good. It was hard but I found the keyword tool Jaaxy that you recommend, and now it’s easy to find low competition keywords that are easy to rank.
Thanks
Thanks for the feedback Marty on working with Jaaxy. I think when you first start trying to rank content for a niche site it can be intimidating. But once you get a better feel of how to write content for your readers, it goes much more smoothly.
Once I started working with Jaaxy, I was able to get all my posts to rank faster and higher.
Best of luck to you and your online business. If you need continuing education and support, check out my #1 Ranked Training Program.
Great and helpful article!! I’ve been trying to figure out how to find my niche and move forward with my online business.
You make some excellent points on how to find a niche that you like and care about, plus you really focus on the niche audience when making your this decision. Much appreciated.
Thanks
Hi Abena,
That’s really great to here. I think this is one of the most import aspects to think about when creating a niche website/online business. Think of your passions or things that you know that most people don’t know about. Then research your niche, check out the keywords of your niche for competition and volume of monthly searches and then get to work.
As long as you’re creating your content to help people, the money will come. Focus on what’s important to the group of people you plan on helping.
Best,
Todd
Hi Todd,
I have been looking for a way to make money from home for a long time. This seems to be one of the best ways so far.
Unfortunately I am not very savvy when it comes to online marketing.
I don’t have any experience, knowledge or understanding of this area.
I do have a niche (making jewelry) which I would like to develop, but have not the faintest idea how to do this. Would a Blog work?
Most information I find is all very ‘techie’ using language I don’t understand.
Also how would I get companies who sell associated products to pay me commission, and how would I find them?
Hi Margie,
You have the most important aspects to start your own online business, you have a desire to work online and make your own business and you already have a niche – selling jewelry. Half the battle solved.
A blog is perfect for your niche and really any online business. A blog is fun to create, easy to manage, and is the best way to get free traffic to whatever products you want to sell online.
Affiliate marketing is quite simple. You’re marketing a product so it’s easy to get approved as an affiliate to products that match your niche. Since you’re marketing someone else’s product, that part’s easy.
What you need to learn to do is to bring in traffic to your niche site.
You don’t have to worry about programming and using WordPress as your content manager to build your site is super easy, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know to get started and maintain a long-term online business.
The only thing at this point that you need to do is get educated and walked through how to do these steps, and that’s what Wealthy Affiliate is for.
They’ll teach you how to build your site, complete keyword research based on your niche, and bring traffic to your site in order to sell niche related products.
You’ll have all the knowledge and support that you need, we’re here to help.
Once a free member, check out the forums, the tutorials and training’s, or get started with the first set of 10 classes. Their super easy and you’ll get a better idea of what I’m talking about.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Thanks,
Todd
I’ve been looking into a couple niche ideas, but mostly want to produce a site to sell my art. Do you think this would be a good niche idea for a website? And how can I make money from it other than selling my own artwork?
Nidia
Hi Nidia,
Art is a great niche and any niche can be turned into an online business as long as you have products or services that you can sell that relate to your niche.
You could sell art supplies, art classes, your artwork and others. It really is pretty open. The key is to get educated on how to build out the foundation to your online business (a.k.a. a website) and then learn how to do keyword research to reach your niche audience.
I know of an artist that took the Wealthy Affiliate training program and 6 months later she was making an extra 2-3 thousand dollars by selling her art and art supplies. As she continued to build her business, her sales continued to increase.
So you’ve got a good niche idea, you just need to learn how to put the other pieces of the puzzle together, and for that I would recommend you get started training at Wealthy Affiliate, click the link to read more about their services if you like.
Thanks and take care,
Todd
