With modern tools, creating a website is extremely easy and simple. Learning how to make money on your website takes a bit of know how.
There’s thing that you want to avoid and some tricks to the trade. In fact, all of the methods we will discuss have decent income potential.
Just remember, it’s always a good idea to think about how you will make money on your website before you start working on the website.
How to Make Money on Your Website:
So here are a few of the most simple and inexpensive ways to make money on your website:
1. Display Ads!
Probably the easiest way to make some cash from your website is to sign-up for an advertisement platform and display ads on your website.
The advertisers will pay a certain amount depending on the keywords and the type of ads. You can be paid per click or per impression (views) and rates vary depending on the company and keywords. You could also consider Ezoic or another ad-network.
This type of advertising is called Pay Per Click or PPC for short.
The most popular advertiser platform is Google Ad-sense, a cool service that makes it possible for anyone to start earning some cash from their websites.
To use the program, all you have to do is verify that you’re the owner of your website and copy and paste a code into your website’s source code, that’s it.
I remember back when this program was all the rage, everyone started creating niche specific websites to make money with Ad-sense, and a lot of people had good success with it.
Be careful of programs claiming to be backed by Google!
With Ad-sense, it’s all about finding advertisers that can pay well for traffic, and targeting the right keyword.
Downsides to Pay Per Click Advertising:
This involves a lot of research! (And there’s a lot of competition too).
But sometimes you can find advertisers that will pay $50 for one click, or more!
So, there’s potential to make money with Google Ad-sense, but it’s all about creating a laser targeted website for certain ads.
Nowadays Ad-sense is not as popular, but it could still bring in a few bucks here and there, it’s worth checking out.
You can also offer direct advertising on your website, where people can purchase ad-space directly from your website. If your website is relatively popular, that’s one method you can use.
To use direct advertising all you need to do is write a page about your rates and website statistics, and wait for people to get in touch.
2. Donate Button:
If you run a non-profit website for a charity or something similar, consider including a donate button. There are plenty of generous people out there who are always looking for charities to send their money.
It might sound like a silly idea, but sometimes including a simple donate button along with a call to donate is all it takes to bring in a good amount of cash every month.
Of course, this only works for some websites, such as charities or kick-starters.
3. Affiliate Marketing:
This is one of the easiest ways to make money online, one that I highly recommend.
There are products that have affiliate programs in pretty much any niche, so finding something to promote is not that difficult.
You just have to sign-up as an affiliate and grab the affiliate link.
Then, write articles, and point people to your affiliate link.
It’s really simple, and if you want to learn more about affiliate marketing read this article.
Actually, I make 98% of all my money online as an affiliate marketer, this is an affiliate website, and you can make something similar too.
Without a Plan It’s Hard to Succeed:
Do the research.
Discover what you would like to create a website about, then research ways to make money in that niche.
This will mean you need to find some good keywords, and then start working on the website.
If you have a clear plan in place, it’s much easier to focus on your work. You’ll likely see results faster than if you started a website without any preparation.
So do the research before you start a website!
But, of course, some people went ahead and already made a website, and that’s fine. I’m not going to tell you to trash the website and start all over, relax.
If you already have a website, that’s okay, you can still turn it into a source of income.
Make a Simple, Profitable Review-Based Website:
Of course, if I tell you to create an affiliate marketing website, that’s like telling you to make money; it’s rather vague and doesn’t really show you where to start or what to do.
That’s where most people struggle, it’s likely where you struggle too. There’s just so much information out it can be tough to know where to begin.
Well, there’s one really simple affiliate marketing website that you can create, called a review website.
One success story is about a student named Colton, who managed to pay back all his student loans within a year (a feat that takes most people 21 years to complete!) from simple Amazon affiliate review websites!

Hi Todd,
It is great to know that there are many ways to make money on the internet if you have a website. I have a website so I am looking into all these options and see if they really will leave me some income.
I got approved for google adsense a couple of days ago so that is nice!
I will also try to sign up for affiliate programs!
Hi Emmanuel,
Good for you. I’d focus on helping people that share your niche or theme to your site. Whatever it’s about, try to provide valuable content that this audience is searching for on a daily basis.

Hi Todd, my experience with Adsense so far has been that it is a waste of space. One must have tons of traffic to generate some income from it, and by this I mean really thousands of visitors daily. As for the rest, I know the Colton’s story, have been in touch with him, so indeed it is as you describe it. We started practically in the same time at Wealthy Affiliate, but he is far more successful. Thank you, it was interesting to read your post..how to make money on your website..
Thanks Jovo and i would tend to agree with you on Adsense, affiliate marketing is a much better way to monitize your website, especially if you know how to convert your content to sales.
To learn more, you just need to spend time at the Wealthy Affiliate Training Center. I’d recommend you check out their memberships and for sure start looking into their Live Video Classes. You get much more in depth knowledge on converting sales by watching a 1 hour webinar on the topic.
Thanks,
Todd
This article on ways to monetize a website is just what I need Todd. I have been using affiliate links on my website for a while now but I don’t feel like they’re making me the money they should be making with the current traffic I have. Once my traffic rate is high enough I will probably look into selling ad space. I will keep this post bookmarked for future reference. Thanks for the read!
Paul, try to focus on your targeted keyword based niche posts that help people and you’ll see better results. Quality content that helps people is the key to rankings and making money with your website.
You should also strive to build keyword based posts that link to a landing page that causes a person to come to the decision to buy something. With these techniques you’ll see better financial results.
Thanks,
Todd
Thanks Todd for you quick and simple explaination. With your advice I can see a clear direction where I am heading.
Do you mind sharing with us how long it takes to get to where you are today through the affiliate marketing? You’ve clearly explained how to make money from a website, but what’s the time frame I’m looking at?
Look forward to hearing more success stories from you.
Alvin

Great Tips Todd! I absolutely agree with your method about monetizing our site. I have never thought of creating a “Donate” button on my page. Nice tips!
I am an affiliate marketer too but recently I feel lost. I have been investigating methods about making money online but there are too much information.
I don’t know what to do to get more traffic and rank high in Google. Is there any good training’s for me that you specifically would recommend?
Hi Cyril,
I can totally relate, even to this stage of my online career I’m always analyzing new ways to make money on my websites. There’s 1,000’s of ways to make money online, but I think the best is by creating niche sites that you are passionate about. Why? Because it’s the least risk and most effective way to develop your skills as a marketer.
Plus, as you consistently build content that reaches out to your niche and is what they’re looking for, you’ll develop a passive stream of income. Then take your profits and reinvest in your site with more content or by creating an eBook that you can sell.
The key is traffic and understanding what your niche audience wants. The best training to accomplish this with the least amount of risk is by following a proven system like the one Wealthy Affiliate offers.
This is what I did every day, it takes a little time (click here to see how much time it takes to make money with a website), but the rewards are incredible once you get your site up running, producing traffic, and making steady income.
Best of luck, let me know if you need more help.
Todd
Todd,
I agree with the suggestions that you proposed in this article. It is interesting to know that the donate button does work sometimes especially on Black Friday, people can donate the money for getting nothing! Talking about the pay per click, I would like to learn more about that, will it make us to lose money? I heard some people saying that pay per click is risky, how true is that? Besides, I am starting to do affiliate marketing and hoping to see some results by doing the reviews like you said. Thanks for Colton’s story, it is inspiring! does he have to buy Amazon products in order to do reviews then? Any other ways without spending more money to earn money?
Hi Jenna,
Review sites work great and many times you can buy the product locally, review, and then send it back if it’s not something you need.
If you don’t buy the product, you can still review online info about the product and create a summary of pros and cons in your review. I personally think you’ll have a better review if you have experience with the product, but it’s your call.
PPC can be very risky and is most effective to generate an email opt-in or a lead. I use PPC on my real estate site and pay $1,000/mo for about 40 leads. So a bit on the costly side, but the return on the lead is much more lucrative.
On this site, I’ve done PPC and you’ll get some occasional sales, but it’s not a good return on investment. So with this site, I focus on content and ranking which provides free traffic to this site and that alone provides me with a full time income.
Focus on providing quality content to your niche audience and the rankings will happen if you’re doing proper keyword research.
Thanks,
Todd

Hi Todd,
Previously reading several past articles I know for a fact that you always create some incredibly well-composed and highly educational content. This article is no exception, sir.
I found it interesting that one of the major concepts you tried to put forth in this article is the need for the person to perform research before actually beginning his/her online business venture.
It’s often over-looked but if a person does not have an action plan which incorporates researching a niche, ways that the individual could make income in this niche, if he/she has knowledge and passion for the niche that taking it all into consideration – then really the odds would be much greater for him/her to ever become successful and bring in online income.
You then promoted the best training opportunity out there should a person need to be educated on becoming a successful affiliate marketer. And face it probably 99% of everyone about to start up an online business needs training.
As you stated there is no better place to pick up this educational training than at Wealthy Affiliate!
Jeff
Hi Jeff,
Thanks so kindly for your feedback on this post and the content we produce. That means a great deal to me – Cheers!!
Yeah, Wealthy Affiliate is an amazing training center for anyone who’s got an online business. The training is simple to follow and apply. It does take action and knowledge, and one thing many students have told me in the past is that WA actually inspires them to do better, think outside the box, and makes it possible to believe in your dreams.
Sounds cheesy, but it’s true. So many times in the beginning, I found myself needing inspiration and encouragement, I’m certainly glad I had a resource like WA by my side.
You have a much greater chance of success when you follow a proven plan.
Thanks,
Todd
Great article with keeping it simple and to the point.
I have often wondered about building a website and using Google Adsense. Like you mentioned there is lots of information and how and where to start is a big decision that needs to be done with a plan as you stated.
When building a site and you want to use Google Adsense, how much traffic do you need to start seeing results?
Thanks Travis, you do want to keep things simple when you are learning how to make money on your website. Too many distractions can really break your momentum.
Stick to focusing on helping your niche as you build out your site and you’ll do great.
I’ve got Google Adsense on this site in just a few posts. And I recently removed it from my side bar. My site gets between 500 – 1,000 visitors per day and over having Google Adsense for a year, I’ve made $115 dollars.
That’s not much considering this site makes full time income. One experiment I had was to put it on my Guide To Making Money Online post. This post is #2 and/or #3 in Google and these keywords are costly, but I just focus on my affiliate products that I know help people.
Google Adsense just doesn’t for this site. I’ve got a buddy who made 4K/mo off them through a niche site that was based on interpreting your name in multiple Asian languages, but I think he was getting around 100K visitors to his site per month.
Todd
Another great post Todd! I too have a blog and I do use affiliate marketing. I have not started with Google Adsense yet as I really don’t understand completely how it works. I need to do some research into the PPC before signing up. My only worry is that I rack up too many fees, see this is how little I know. I would love to see a post on how Google Adsense really works 🙂
Just keep taking the courses at Wealthy Affiliate. By the last course, Kyle will walk you through PPC marketing and will even show you how to create relevant campaigns.
But I wouldn’t encourage you to start there because of the cash factor. Also, most PPC converts better to get someone to sign up to your email opt-in versus direct affiliate sales.
As for Google Adsense goes, it’s quite simple, you can put their code in your posts or widgets and then when someone clicks on them, you make some money. How much money depends on the keywords you’re ranking for a particular post.
Google Adsense makes pennies unless you’ve got a ton of traffic so I focus more on the affiliate marketing aspect and I make so much more money that way.
Don’t worry about this for now, just focus on blogging and helping your niche audience. Keep it simple.
