Found yourself wondering what is HubPages?
Than you came to the right place.
When looking to improve your rank in search engines, most people will come across articles and videos that recommend submitting articles to Web 2.0 directories.
Web 2.0 directories are websites that allow you to publish articles with a link back to your main website for traffic and a boost in search engines.
However, Google’s ranking algorithm has went through some rather drastic changes in the past few years, and Web 2.0 directories are not as valuable as they once were.
One directory in particular called HubPages is still a favorite among article marketers.
But what is HubPages and can you use it to improve your business?
Let’s find out.

What is HubPages?
So here’s the thing:
HubPages is a platform that lets you publish articles and you can earn money from those articles, depending on how many views they receive.
HubPages is a revenue sharing website where the revenue is shared with content creators.
This opportunity was quite hot back in the day, and I know quite a few people who have put in a lot of time and effort to publish articles on the platform.
The idea is simple; write as much as you can, and wait for people to read the articles.
When your articles hit a certain view count, some earnings are added to your account.
The platform uses Google Ad-sense and the advertisements are added to each article that you publish.
When someone clicks the add, the author earns a percentage of the cash Google Ad-sense pays the company.
HubPages shares 60% of the revenue earned from the article with the author of the article.
What is cool is you can write about pretty much anything you want.
Here are some of the HubPages Categories:
And it does work, Hubpages is definitely not a scam.
But does that mean it’s a good opportunity? Is the pay good? Is it worth the time required to write articles?
Let’s find out.
How Much Money Can You Make With HubPages?
This is the most common question people asking regarding HubPages, and it’s a little difficult to answer, but I’ll do my best.
For starters, the amount of money that you earn completely depends on the amount of traffic that your articles receive.
So how much traffic do you need to earn cash?
In most cases, the average you earn for every 1,000 views is approximately three dollars.

It can be higher or lower, but that’s the average.
As you can see, it’s not a very impressive amount.
If you take a look at the site, you’ll see little author-boxes with the amount their earning every month.
I noticed a couple of interesting things about these testimonials, take a look below:
$350 a month is not too bad.
On the other hand, notice the joined date? She joined in 2009 – that’s almost a decade ago!
And she has 110 published articles.
That’s a lot of articles.
Imagine if she had all those articles on her own website? And used them to promote different products?
Chances are she could be making a lot more than $350 a month.
I know people who are making over a thousand dollars a month with less articles than that.
So three dollars for 1,000 views is nothing to write home about.
You’re expected to do keyword research, write well-written and unique articles, and then publish them, over and over again.
But a lot of people use HubPages to practice writing and – essentially – use it for fun, and that’s fine.
I also noticed that people need a lot of articles to make money with HubPages so they mass-produce junk articles, something that you should always avoid.
Why? Because it doesn’t improve your writing skills, and it doesn’t contribute anything of value. More spam.
I’ve also noticed the article quality on HubPages is quite poor at the moment.
But if you want to make money from your content (and who doesn’t?) there are a lot of better options out there.
How to Really Make Money From Your Articles:
If you’re going to write articles, and you want to make money from those articles, here are the best ways to do that.
1. Offer a Content Writing Service
This is the fastest way to make money writing articles.
And you can make a decent amount, depending on your niche and skills.
You won’t make passive-income (unless you have a specific agreement with your clients) but you will earn a flat rate for each article, and for most, that’s enough.
You write an article and get paid for it, done.
Rates vary depending on your niche and expertise, but experienced writers usually charge somewhere between $20-100 for 500 words.
2. Write Articles for Your Own Website, and Include Affiliate Links
This has got to be the best way to make money from your articles.
And you’ll definitely make a lot more than $3 for 1,000 views!
In fact, some of my articles receive a lot less than 1,000 views but bring in hundreds of dollars a month!
What’s the secret?
Keywords… and consistency!
If you’re going to write for someone, then you might as well write for yourself, and make the most of it.
Consider creating a website where you can publish your articles and include affiliate links.

Then you can share those articles on social media, or other platforms to get traffic and make sales.
It’s definitely a lot better than waiting around for someone to click on an link in one of your articles on HubPages!
You can also consider creating an Amazon product review site and earn cash through Amazon’s affiliate program.

Our Conclusion with HubPages
You can use HubPages to make money, but the money will come in very slowly.
Personally, I don’t think it’s worth the effort.
If you invest the same amount of time into writing for your own website you’ll have a successful business in no time.
In my opinion, if you are going to write articles, it’s best to write for your own website and then use those articles to link to an affiliate product or your own services.
That’s one of the best ways to make your content work for you.

What’s best for you, writing for your own affiliate website or for Hubpages?
Thoughts?
I have written several articles for Hubpages, all of which are very highly rated by the site’s own measures, and all of which have been featured by the site, so I know they are considered high quality content. These articles were written as long as seven years ago (2012). You would think producing good content for a website that supposedly pays you for writing would make at least a little bit of money over seven years, right?
I have total balance in my Hubpages account of just over $40. Very conveniently for Hubpages, you have to have a minimum of $50 to cash out at all. My balance increases by approximately $0.04 a month (they have changed the rules since I started; the writers’ share of the earnings used to be higher, which is why I was able to get $40). At this rate, I still have over 20 years before I even meet the minimum balance to get any money at all.
Because of this arbitrary minimum cash out balance, the overwhelming majority of Hubpages writers will never receive a penny for their work. Of course, Hubpages will happily earn ad revenue for themselves from your content.
I have even written to the support center and politely asked to be able to withdraw my $40 because it would be impossible for me to ever reach $50. I figured they would care enough about their users to make an exception if asked nicely, and it was just $40. Not even $40 I was asking to get for free, it was MY $40. To my surprise, the individual I spoke to refused to budge and even became rude when I continued trying to explain how their policies would make it impossible for me to ever access my money.
I realize now that Hubpages is basically a scheme to trick people into producing free content they can profit from. They say you’ll get paid for it, but the rate of earnings is ridiculously low, and they have that “minimum balance” in place to ensure most people won’t even be able to receive the little money they earned. The entire business model is unethical, and the internet will be a better place when they either go out of business or get shut down for legally dubious business practices.
Hi Hays,
Thanks for sharing your experience working with Hubpages. I think it validates much of what we mention in this review, so much appreciated.
You seem like a pretty decent writer, you could always take your skills and build an Amazon affiliate site or I’m currently looking for another writer to add to our team.
If you’re interested, email me at info@learntogrowwealthonline.com
If you’d prefer to start building your own Amazon affiliate site, here’s the my top recommendation to get the training, tools and all the other resources you’ll need to be successful.
It’s not that hard, either way, there’s opportunity out there for you.
Best,
Todd
Thanks for doing this review on HubPages, I have heard of HubPages before but I never knew exactly what it was until reading your review. I think it’s great that they allow you to earn money from the articles that you post on their site. But I think it will be difficult to earn enough money to support yourself from this system. However, Wealthy Affiliate seems like a great alternative. I’ve investigated your review and I think this is a better long term solution to making money online as a writer.
Aboslutely WMP,
HubPages is a nice source but not a great money source. If you’re into online business, you’ve got to go through the Wealthy Affiliate training.
There’s just too much knowledge that online businesses need that Wealthy Affiliate teaches.
Thanks,
Todd
When I was first interested in article marketing, I was taught to write articles for platforms like squidoo and Ezine.
It seemed odd to me that this was a way to make money, so I went along with it. I wrote what I considered to be great articles only to never make any money.
It sounds to me that Hubpages is the same, also a waste of my time. I stand to earn much more by posting quality content to my web site, based on my efforts.
This is true Erin and I’d always go with building out your own site in a specific niche. And really, all your doing is building more content for HubPages.
Thanks for the feedback and if you need help with your online business, get connected with Wealthy Affiliate.
They had a great webinar on building landing pages this last Friday.
Best,
Todd
Hello there,
I definitely prefer to do it on my own. I mean, why would I have another party sharing part of my efforts if I can go with the usual method you just described in the article. I know WA, and it is also a place where you can learn a lot about online marketing.
Great article!
Absolutely Caito, HubPages is a great idea because it has people adding content and building the site for the company.
Better to do what you’re thinking, and Wealthy Affiliate is a brilliant resource for online business, content writing, videos, whatever.
Best,
Todd
Thanks for so clearly explaining HubPages. I love writing, but $3 per 1000 views is a hard way to go.
I’ve written as a freelancer and I’ve written for my own sites. In my experience, writing for your own website or blog is the best way to earn money as a writer.
I make money faster as a freelancer, but I make more money with my website. Plus, writing for my website avoids the hassles of trying to please a client.
Nice Gary, that couldn’t be any clearer for those that have got writing skills.
I’ve always wondered why writers don’t pull the trigger at least for one website.
Give it go, it’s been great for me and sounds like the same for you Gary.

Hi Todd.
I’ve been exploring using article sites to help boost traffic to my website, would hubspot work for that?
Although I think I’d prefer my writing to earn more in itself than a few dollars here and there. Particularly given the time I spend, testing, researching, checking keywords and structuring them.
I think I’ve answered my own question. Looks like I’ll be building another website to offer writing services.
Thank you
Exactly Jenny,
Sites like HubPages used to carry some SEO weight, but with the amount of time you spend researching products you might as well use that content to boost your own website traffic.
If you need any help on SEO or how to rank content, I’ve created a guide to traffic that I use for every single post I write and this has lead to my quick rankings and extensive traffic.
Check it out, it’s free and takes about 10 minutes to read through.
