If you want to know what is the SEMrush keyword tool, check out our SEMrush Review to see if this product is right for you and your online business.
SEMrush is a membership-based platform for marketers that provides detailed reports on the technical side of online business.
The tool can be used to find a wide range of data such as keywords, traffic stats, back-links, keyword rank, competition, and much more.
Once small business owners learn how to read the data, they can really benefit from using this tool.
Let’s take a detailed look at SEMrush and see if it is a legitimate platform.
SEMrush Review: Product at a Glance
- Name: SEMrush
- Price: Varies. Starter Membership costs $99/month.
- Website: https://www.semrush.com/
- Niche: Website Data Reports
What is the SEMrush Keyword Tool?
SEMrush is an interesting tool that you can try for free, but some of the results are locked until you upgrade.
It can be an extremely useful tool for your business because not only does it analyze your own website and back-links, but it also analyzes your competitors.
In other words, it’s an easy way to take a peak at the competition’s marketing efforts.
SEMrush includes quite a few services; the main service being back-link analysis.
At a glance, the data can seem daunting and complicated.
But it’s easy to learn how to read the information.
What I Liked Most About SEMrush
The following are the services I liked the most from this platform:
- keyword traffic breakdown
- targeted keyword count
- competitor analysis
- current search engine rank for target keywords
That’s Plenty of Insightful Data.
With an upgraded account, you can request a full, detailed, report of your website, complete with charts. You can get a glimpse at the most relevant data with the free version.
I really like how you can see all the information related to your website traffic in one place.
The tool definitely provided me with some interesting insight into where my traffic is coming from.
I thought it was cool to see which articles and keywords are responsible for most of my website traffic.
It’s also an awesome way to track your website’s progress. For example, there are clear charts and graphs that list the keywords and traffic your website receives each month.
And if you continue to target keywords, the stats will continue to climb.
Although I must point out that you can also get the same information for free using Google Analytics.
SEMrush Back-link Tracker:
Back-links are still important. Just make sure your using white hat link building techniques. With SEMrush, you can see how many other websites are pointing back to your website.
This can provide you with a glimpse at what Google’s robots see when they crawl your website.
Sometimes you don’t consciously build back-links but you discover that you have a bunch of back-links.
This can happen when someone featured your website in their articles. Or when you leave a comment on a different website.
Yes! Comments can count as back-links.
But don’t become too obsessed with back-links, as each back-link carries a different value.
Some back-links can increase your rank, while others can decrease your rank.
I like to build back-links the old fashion way; writing articles and letting them be found and shared organically.
On the other hand, there are many agencies dedicated to building back-links for their clients to boost their rank.
Be careful because this is type of marketing is considered a grey-area. Few agencies can create back-links that don’t contain spam.
Gone are the days when you could publish articles in article directories with a link back to your website and climb to the top of the keyword results.
SEMrush: Free Test Run
I always love when tools open their doors for free.
SEMrush not only lets you try out their service for free, but you also don’t even need to make an account.
You just head over to their website and type in your website address (or a website address you want to check).
And a wealth of data will be revealed.
What I Didn’t Like About SEMrush:
Though SEMrush does provide a lot of very useful information about your website, there are some downsides as well.
First, the learning curve.
When SEMrush delivers the website report, the charts and data can be quite baffling at first.
It takes awhile to learn what all the abbreviations and numbers mean.
That is why I recommend starting with a free account before upgrading to a paid membership!
Second, the price.
Even though I’m confident SEMrush delivers accurate and useful information, the price was a bit of a letdown.
The cheapest membership is $99/month.
And that’s a little too much for most website owners, at least while their websites are still under construction.
I believe this tool would be best for people who already have established websites and online businesses.
On that note, the platform won’t even be able to find data on brand new websites.
Third, some people have reported inaccurate data.
Most traffic tools will deliver different data, and the difference is usually quite small.
But some customers have reported that SEMrush’s traffic data for specific keywords is no-where near the same as the data Google delivers with it’s Keyword Planner.
So this has lead to questions about the tool’s accuracy!
Is SEMRush The Right Tool for You?
As someone who recommends this tool, it’s not the smart choice for some people.
The main downside being the price.
Most new internet marketers already have a lot of monthly bills to worry about.
If you’re just starting a website for the first time, or if you are planning to create a website soon, a cheaper alternative would be a smarter choice.
SEMRush calculates data on a monthly basis, and usually it will take more than a few months for your keywords to even appear on Google.
So for new marketers, I have another tool that’s much cheaper and delivers similar information.
You can read my in-depth review about that tool here.
On the other hand, if you already have an established website that is bringing in a decent amount of cash each month, SEMRush can be very useful.
It’s also perfect for marketing agencies or freelancers that need to track their client’s progress.
But anyone can take SEMRUSH for a test run.
Where Can I Learn More?
After reading this article, if you’re interested in setting up a website and starting your online business, then you need accurate training material.
Much like a kid picking up textbooks for his education, you need the right educational material too.
I happen to be a member of a fantastic online business training course that shows you exactly what needs to be done to start making cash online.

Hi, thanks for posting this review.
I was wondering if there any alternative apps you would suggest that do similar things as SEMrush but in a simpler way?
Also, are there any plugins I have to install or some coding I need to type in to make SEMrush work? I use WordPress as my website.
I use Jaaxy Michael, no plugins, coding or apps, just access to my keywords where ever I have online access.
It’s better priced, simple to use, and made all the difference for me when I first started targeting niche traffic via keyword research.
I also like that I can check my rankings and know my results are working or if I need to improve a post.
Thanks
Todd
What I understood after reading your article and paying the SEMrush tool a little visit is that successful marketers must be good at performing detailed analysis for their market and spot the competition so they know what they’re dealing with and how much effort they should spend to rank over their competitors.
SEMrush is a great tool to do just that!
However and as you mentioned, the downside is the high-cost membership, so what I did next was checking your URL to the other tool, which I can say it truly fascinated me.
That Jaxxy tool is the cheapest in the market I guess, and it’s full of detailed data as the other “fancy” tools.
All it took me to join is trying their free trial.
Thank you for the extremely useful resources, Todd, you really made my day productive!
Awesome Aydo, thanks for the great feedback. Jaaxy is one of my 5 most used tools to run my online business.
But it’s not just using Jaaxy, it’s using white hat seo techniques to rank content naturally.
I do this using a series of steps and Jaaxy is part of it. I’ve gotten so consistent with my rankings and system that I created a helpful Free eBook to Target Traffic.
You should check this out because I think it will even make you more productive with your online business.
Let me know if you have any follow up questions.
Best,
Todd
I have heard of SEMrush but hearing about the benefits has me want to try it out. I think I might try it out knowing you don’t need to create an account and you can track the wealth of your data.
I do think the membership options sound a bit pricey and I personally would not pay for it when there is the free keyword tool at my online training course Wealthy Affiliate.
I am personally using their services now and also like the option to use Jaaxy at a cheaper price which I hear is also good.
My question is, do you think this keyword tool compares to Jaaxy at all or even WA’s keyword tool?
Hey Arie,
Good question. I used Wealthy Affiliate’s free keyword tool when I first started but it just didn’t work for me in that I wasn’t able to grasp the entire concept of keyword research with it.
I tried Jaaxy, hating to pay for more services to improve my internet marketing education, but was pleasantly surprised.
It all started to make sense to me once I started using Jaaxy. That is.. find low competition keyword phrases that my niche is searching, know the monthly search volume, and then know what the search engine optimization score was.
This SEO score was a mystery to me at first. They state that it’s how relevant the keyword phrase is. I found that the higher the number for this, plus low competition was the secret to rank quickly on page one of Google.
So I use Jaaxy, it’s easy to use and has all the important info I need to manage my business.
Other keyword tools typically offer too much information that doesn’t matter and I love the pricing of Jaaxy.
On that note: Jaaxy did just make a ton of improvements and is increasing their price, but not for a few more weeks.
So if you’re on the fence with Jaaxy, I’d encourage you to get it now versus the future to save some significant money on a monthly basis.
Best,
Todd
SEMrush seems like a great tool but for the price it is very hard to still overlook and take action. I am sure once I start making more in my business, I would come back and use SEMrush as it is a very good program and would make checking on my competitors more competitive.
Thanks for your feedback Travis on our SEMrush Keyword Tool review. Cheers
Hi there,
With so many keyword tools out there, it`s almost impossible to decide which one to choose if you have enough money.
Unfortunately for me, I`ve not been able to try out the SEMrush upgrade option because I find the $99.95 monthly membership price tag is way out of my reach.
I’m surprised that with such a high price tag they can have inaccurate data. Having said that, I always use Semrush free version to see what my competitors are doing. Just wish they had more for unregistered members.
Thanks for a very informative review, unfortunately, for now I have to stick to free keyword tools.
Keywords are a big part of creating high ranking content, but keyword alone is not enough so I can not justify spending close to $100 for a keyword too while there are keyword tools out there that cost about $20.
Excellent points Roamy. That’s why I like Jaaxy. It has everything I need and if I want to do competitor research, I can check rankings with Jaaxy and read the direct results from Google.
I can also get all the keyword data I need from Google Analytics, so points well taken.
Best,
Todd
Even though I have not used Semrush tool yet, it does sound like a helpful tool from the features you’ve covered in your review.
I do agree with you that a $99 price tag is too steep, especially for someone who has just started an online business.
I’ve had Jaaxy in the past, and it is a super helpful tool for finding niche ideas, keywords and traffic volume.
I particularly like the site analysis feature that tells you site rankings for a particular keyword and other useful information like meta-data and backlinks.
Unless you have multiple websites or generating a good amount of money, I’d recommend sticking with the Jaxxy Pro. Semrush is too expensive for anyone just starting with an online business IMHO.
Great feedback Josh and I think you’ve got it figured out. SEMrush is a good tool, but not necessary for that majority of online marketers like Jaaxy is..
Best,
Todd
I have had a look at Semrush in the past, and although it seems a great tool, the price put me off, as well as the fact it was a bit of a learning curve, and the charts were sometimes confusing.
I like a tool that saves time, and is easy and quick to use. I would rather spend time writing more content rather than hours searching for keywords that I can use.
Keyword research is really important, but it shouldn’t be time-consuming.
Well said Michel, that’s why I love Jaxxy. I can go to the site, search my content ideas, get brainstorming ideas from Jaaxy that are sometimes better than what I was researching, and create lists of keyword phrases that I want to target.
I then have my content creators review the lists and can decide who is best for the job. Utilizing keyword tools should be simple and informative.
SEMrush provides good data, but the price is not worth it when you use Jaaxy and Google Analytics. It’s the same info besides the back link info. Who cares?
Build your site, help your niche and all will come to fruition.
Todd
Hi! I recently starting using SEMrush as a keyword planning tool for my website and so far I love it! I totally agree with the cons that you list above. The membership price is WAY too high and the charts and graphs can be pretty heavy and hard to understand at first!
Hi Ally,
Thanks for your feedback on Semrush keyword tool. It’s a good tool, but maybe not for the new internet marketer.
Regardless of your skill level, you should be targeting traffic that’s specifically interested in your niche.
If you don’t know how to do this, check out our Free eBook on Targeted Traffic. It does a great job explaining the use and placement of keywords.
Best,
Todd
You’re dead on about the price. As a newcomer to the world of online marketing, I must say it may be a bit too much but I can’t deny the fact that I’d love to have a tool like this at my disposal.
But what exactly does SEMrush offer for the extra $80 that Jaxxy doesn’t? It’s quite a difference in price, to say the least.
Great points Ryan. Mostly SEMrush is offering back link data and competitor analysis.
Keyword tracking is simple and free with Google Analytics.
The reality is that Jaaxy works like a charm to start and run online businesses that are based on content marketing.
It certainly helps with pay per click campaigns, domain name research, rank checking, and brain storming for new content ideas.
And lets face it, written and video content is king. If you understand keyword research, you can dominate both platforms.
As a matter of fact, you can learn how to rank better on YouTube with Jaaxy.
Now as you’ve got your site more developed and making consistent money to where you have a staff and you need more data to out rank your competition, SEMrush would be a valuable tool.
For most, Jaaxy will work just fine.
